Buddhisam, founded by Gauama Buddha, originated at the same tome as Jainism in the same region. Siddartha who later came to be known as Gautama Buddha, was born in 563 BC at Limbini in Kapilavastu, situated in the foothills of Nepal. Gautama belonged to a Kshatriya royal family. His father Suddhodhana, was the ruler of the Shakya republican state. His mother Maya, died seven days after his birth and he was brought up by his step_mother Gautami with great care and affection.

Buddha was married to Yashodhara and had a son named Rahul. At the age of 35, Gautama Buddha attained enlightenment at Bodh Gaya in Bihar.Buddha passed away at Kushinagar in Easter UP in Gorakhpur district in 483 BC at the age of 80. Buddha recommended the eightfold path for cessation of suffering, higher wisdom and peace of mind. It is also known as the 'Ashtanga Marg'. Jatakas are the stories of previous births of Buddha. Buddha taught in Pali which, like Prakrit, was the common man's language.
